Does Exercise Benefit Bones by Lowering of PTH?

Finnish investigators found that 12 months of daily "impact" exercise significantly decreased blood levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in women 35-40 years of age. PTH is produced by the parathyroid glands in the neck and is critical to normal calcium metabolism and bone health. However, excess levels of PTH can thin and weaken bones. These findings may shed new light on the mechanisms by which exercise is protective of bones.
