A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine supports the common sense notion that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in women even if they remain too fat. That is if physical activity levels reach 1000 kilocalories per week, or about the equivalent of 30 min of brisk walking on most days. However, "reduced risk" implys that some risk remained for those that remained overweight or obese. Risk appeared to be completely eliminated if moderate physical activity was increased on average to 45 minutes per day

An Inconvenient Policy
Maggie Gallagher calls out the ambivalence of the politically correct Western elites regarding China’s one child policy today at Townhall. More accurately, China’s forced one live child birth policy. Forced, as in government directed physical restraint of a woman in order to abort her wanted child… Come on everyone chant with me sing-song “Every child, a wanted child…” Yes, these are the same bunch of know-it-alls that spin out of control if some gutter creep terrorist is roughed up a bit in Guantanamo in order to obtain information that might prevent the slaughter of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of innocent people.
"Tibetan Buddhists have their friends in Hollywood, and the international human rights community still frowns on torturing political activists. But China's brutal oppression of women's bodies and basic disrespect for human life generates a collective yawn in the Western human rights community. "
Indeed, where is the "pro-choice" outrage? Certainly, their passion for a “woman's right to choose” should be unleashed in all its fury against such an obvious violation of their mantra. Or, could it be that us pro-life simpletons had it right all along? Could it be that they are pro-choice as long as the choice is abortion? In fact, I would venture to guess that there are more than a few "pro-choice" out there that would love to implement a similar no-choice policy in the United States.

Quote of the Year?
Last week in Israel President Bush delineated the difference in thought between those who are and those who are not prepared to protect America …like a laser beam.
"Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is -- the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."
The extent to which the American left and their media allies came unglued automatically propels the excerpt to the top of the list for the SL quote of the year. Hopefully, the electorate will take it to heart so that a President 70 years from now will not be compelled to utter Tehran in the same sentence with Munich.

Another Excellent Reason to Get off the Couch, Computer and X-box
If boys were outside playing more often they wouldn't be lining up for plastic surgery. Obviously, parents are culpable as well. Not only should they be getting their kids off their duffs, but they should be spending more of their time preparing healthy meals at home. Instead, many are choosing to deal with their fast food predicament with quick fix boob jobs.

iPS Gaining Acceptance
Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) the recent technology by which stem cell lines can be created without the destruction of embryos is gaining traction. Undoubtedly, challenges remain before iPS reaches the clinic. Nevertheless, this is great news for scientists truly interested in pursuing medical cures while minimizing ethical concerns. It may not be all that welcome by those primarily interested in promoting their utilitarian political agenda.

"Judges invent wedge issues. Always have."
Great line from WSJ today. It needs just a little fine tuning though...it's "Activist Judges" that create wedge issues. Always will. The silver lining is that overreaching activist judges have a way of jolting the complacent middle back to attention. Let's pray that this is the case in California.

Politics Ahead of Progress
Apparently, Dr. Bertram Lubin, president of the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute and world renowned researcher in the treatment of sickle-cell anaemia was shut out of funding from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) in its recent deliberations on how to distribute $263 million in funding. Lubin's group was denied in part because his work “lacked work on embryonic stem cells." It seems ethically sound use of umbilical cord derived stem cells was disqualifying. Of course, any success in this arena would run counter to the underlying CIRM agenda, that being to rally public support behind human embryo research. It is no surprise to SL readers that embryonic stem cell proponents are more interested in political purity than actually finding cures.
