University of Arizona Student President Defies Public Mandate

This misuse of public funds came to my attention by way of the Center for Arizona Policy. Apparently the Associated Students of the University of Arizona Appropriations Board followed ASUA bylaws and denied a pro-abortion medical student group additional funds to be used to send students for abortion training. This decision was also consistent with the wishes of voters and Arizona law which dictates that no abortions be performed at any facility under the jurisdiction of the Arizona Board of Regents. However, after colluding with the club president, ASUA President Erin Hertzog used her first veto to overturn the board’s decision, thus providing over $1,400 for the club’s dubious enterprise. Interestingly, the club president accused the Appropriations Board of basing their original decision on “personal beliefs.” Isn’t it comforting that the ASUA President did not allow “personal beliefs” to interfere with her decision. Moreover, since ASUA and the “Medical Students for Choice” are so interested in providing opportunities not included in the medical school curriculum I’m sure they will be anxious to fund student training in comprehensive crisis pregnancy counseling including fetal development with the assistance of ultrasound and information on abortion risks such as infertility. Or, perhaps they would prefer to support a course on post-abortion counseling to help restore shattered lives and relationships left in the wake of unscrupulous doctors who exploit the poor choices of the vulnerable.
